Almario and De Jesus: Doctors Honoris Causa Tuesday, March 31, 2009
The month of March has stood witness to a victorious and hopeful batch of graduates in all levels of education as they receive their much-coveted diplomas.
URC has had its series of recognition and graduation rites in all levels from Pre-School to its Graduate Programs. The culmination of these events occurred during the 17th and 41st Commencement Exercises of the Graduate School and Undergraduate Departments respectively, on March 22, 2009.
The event was highlighted by the conferment of the tile Doctor of Literature Honoris Causa upon Prof. Virgilio S. Almario, who, at the same time was the ceremony’s guest of honor and speaker.
Almario, or Rio Alma, as he is most commonly known is a poet, literary historian and a critic rolled into one. He has made his constant presence felt in both local and national writing workshops. In fact, he has founded literary workshops – Galian sa Arte at Tula (GAT) and Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo (LIRA) where many renowned writers have come under his tutelage.
In 1984, he was granted a TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) in the field of Literature. Presently, he is the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters of the University of the Philippines.
URC’s very own Dr. Belen B. de Jesus, who has a PhD Degree in Development Education at Stanford University where she was a Ford-Stanford University scholar, was likewise conferred upon the title of Doctor of Humanities Honoris Causa by the Notre Dame of Marbel University in Coronadal, South Cotabato. Dr. de Jesus had finished her Baccalaureate Degree in Secondary Education in the then Notre Dame of Marbel College and has served for 23 long years from 1967 to 1990, occupying different administrative positions, to wit: Dean of Graduate School (1967-1980), Administrative Assistant to the President (1967 - 1969), Academic Vice President (1975 - 1980) and Coordinator : UNICEF Notre Dame of Marbel College Accelerated Teacher Training Program for Cultural Communities of Cotabato, and other Special Funded Programs (1977 - 1990).
De Jesus is an experienced resource person, speaker, lecturer, researcher and consultant, proof of which are her involvement in 231 different training programs and conferences and still counting. She has to her merit, 32 published researches.
Dr. Belen, as she is fondly called by Carmelians, has been a recipient of both local and national awards and citations among others: “Dangal ng Lipi” Awardee in Education, Province of Bulacan, 1995; Archdiocese of Manila Papal Awardee, “PRO ECCLESIAE ET PONTIFICE” Recognition, Outstanding Contribution on Catholic Education, 1998; “Natatanging Babae ng Bayan ng Calumpit”, 2002; “One of Ten Outstanding Women of Bulacan”, 2002; Outstanding Alumni - Calumpit Institute, 2007 United Group of Charities and Human Development, Inc. Outstanding Alumni - Calumpit Institute, 2007; and Grand Awards Ceremony “ Gintong Sikap – National Award”, 2004. Two of her most recent research awards were: 2006 CHED Best HEI Research Program Award – 1st Runner - up Title of the Research: “Social Responsibility in Higher Education Towards a Transformative Education Model and CHED Outstanding Extension Research Program in Region III 2008.
